Different Perfume Types
Selecting a fragrance that perfectly suits a person is undoubtedly subjective and highly personal. Yet, for us to effectively choose what is right, it is important that we know the different types of perfumes available in the market. It is essential to take note, however, that the quality of a fragrance is not necessarily affected by the type it belongs to. It’s category only tells us the amount or the concentration of oil it possesses. So, to make the process of selecting your ideal fragrance easier, let’s have an overview of the different types of perfumes.
Parfum
With the highest fragrance oil concentration that is about 20 to 30%, this type of perfume generally has heavier, stronger, and oilier. Because of these characteristics, parfum is easier to identify and lasts longer leaving you fragrant even after a whole day. And for the same reasons, this is the most expensive as compared to the other types.
Eau De Parfum (EDP)
Eau de parfum holds a lighter concentration at 15 to 20% of fragrance oil. This type of perfume is still quite strong and would typically last on your body for 6 to 8 hours. Eau De Parfum may not be the most expensive but it could still be the best option especially if you do not want to bother yourself for another round of spray during the day.
Eau De Toilette (EDT)
Commonly housed in a spray bottle due to its relatively lower fragrance oil concentration at 5 to 15% is another type of perfume, eau de toilette. Due the amount of oil present in this perfume type, you certainly would find yourself spraying again at some point during the day because in average the scent stays on you between 2 to 4 hours only. One advantage EDT is it could be the most suitable choice if you want to wear a more subtle scent.
Eau de Cologne (EDC)
The oil concentration of eau de cologne is only 2 to 4%. Like EDT, this perfume typically lasts 2 to 4 hours on your body. At a cheaper price, this could be an option of the fragrance you prefer to use. Currently, splash on and aftershave fragrance are marketed as “eau de cologne” in the market.
Eau Fraiche
Among the types of perfumes, eau fraiche is the least expensive and contains the least amount of oil with only 1 to 3%. This is also referred to as fragrance water or mist. The ultra-light oil concentration of this kind of scent also means lowest time that it can stay on your body, only between 1 to 2 hours. However, this could be the best product to wear when you go to the beach or when you hit the gym or go for a walk or run.
To sum up
Perfumes come in different types and certainly serve various purposes. In choosing what is ideal for you, don’t just rely on the price or what the salesperson is pitching. The most expensive may not be what you really need, nor the most popular. Hence, the next time you go shopping, ask yourself, “Is this what I need?”.
